Guide to good beekeeping practices

Farm portraits, also called typical cases or concrete cases, present the functioning and technical and economic characteristics of beekeeping farms, corresponding to choices and consistent practices in a defined context. They are tools for both beekeepers and beekeeping advisors.

Portraits of beekeeping operations

The honey book is a traceability register allowing the beekeeper to meet the regulatory requirements concerning the traceability of his production. It makes it possible to record the history of the management of the batches of honey produced on the beekeeping operation, from production to marketing.

This educational sheet is intended for crop and animal production advisers (including beekeeping) supporting farmers wishing to create closer relationships with beekeepers and implement practices favorable to pollinating insects on their farm.

The quality of a sample is fundamental because it conditions both the feasibility of an analysis, the validity of the result and the relevance of its interpretation. This is why, after the directory of analysis laboratories was put online on the ITSAP-Institut de l'abeille website, technical sheets detailing the sampling procedures were produced.

As soon as Varroa arrived in most of the world's beekeeping population, the selection of bees resistant to this new mite appeared as one of the ways to reduce its impact on the survival of colonies. The ITSAP-Bee Institute has tested the various selection criteria proposed by the research teams. In order to provide very precise guidance to beekeepers wishing to implement them on their colonies, the Institute has designed three technical sheets available in pdf format.

Technical sheets for measuring the natural resistance of bees to Varroa

Keeping a breeding register is mandatory. In particular, it makes it possible to record the health interventions carried out on the apiaries.

Breeding register

This binder contains 15 sheets describing different honey houses, their functioning and their specificities. A variety of situations are presented, with different levels of equipment and a range of different organizations, from individual to collective honey houses. Each sheet contains technical information (type of equipment, capacity, ...), economic information but also testimonies of beekeepers.


Classeur bâtiments et matériels

Il s’agit d’une synthèse concernant les bonnes pratiques d’hygiène en apiculture, publiée par Interapi et réalisée en partenariat avec l’ITSAP. Ce document précise la règlementation existante en matière d’hygiène des denrées alimentaires, rappelle les principales caractéristiques des principaux produits de la ruche (miel, pollen, gelée royale) et détaille des exemples de mesures d’hygiène par produit.

Ce référentiel sur la cire s’adresse à tous les acteurs de la filière, et donne des clés pour mieux comprendre et améliorer collectivement la qualité des cires introduites dans les colonies. Il se présente sous la forme de fiches thématiques consultables en ligne, et vous permet d’obtenir des informations (techniques, scientifiques, …) mais aussi d’identifier des solutions pour préserver la qualité de sa cire et consulter des liens vers des documents d’intérêts.

Wax Guide

Des populations de varroas résistants aux acaricides amitraze et tau-fluvalinate ont été mis en évidence dans plusieurs ruchers de France métropolitaine. Face au risque de présence de varroas résistants ou pour comprendre un échec de traitement, les apiculteurs peuvent faire tester la sensibilité/résistance des varroas infestant leurs colonies grâce à un bio-essai. Dans cette vidéo l'Itsap décrit le principe de ce test et comment il est réalisé. Acaricide resistance test

La lutte contre Varroa ne se limite pas à l'application de traitements acaricides. Afin d'aider les apiculteurs à élaborer une stratégie de lutte adaptée, l'ITSAP propose un guide technique détaillé. Ce dernier présente les concepts clés pour maîtriser ce parasite, sur quatre volets essentiels :

4. Les méthodes populationnelles.

Counting varroa falls is a tedious job for experimenters. To lighten this task, ITSAP-Institut de l'abeille and INRA Avignon, within the framework of UMT PrADE, propose a counting method using the VarEvaL grid.

BeeGIS - Bee Geographic Information System - allows in a few clicks to find out about the rotation characterizing the foraging area around an apiary. Thus information such as surrounding crops (in organic or conventional agriculture), forests, or the hydrographic network will be provided to you. These elements allow beekeepers to better understand and assess the interest of their locations, particularly for production in organic farming.
