All of our projects are carried out in collaboration. For this, we benefit from a rich and unique set of partnerships, covering a wide spectrum of disciplines and activities, ranging from research to the transfer of results to beekeepers. This partnership is mainly based on two networks: [**<u>the UMT PrADE</u>**](https://umtprade.fr/) (Joint Technological Unit for the Protection of Bees in the Environment) which brings together the main applied research units in France, and [**<u>the ADA network</u>**](https://www.adafrance.org/) which works in each region to develop the beekeeping profession by assembling technical references.

This department, which originally created the UMT PrADE, is based in Avignon. Its researchers improve the scientific knowledge on the biology and ecology of bees, on pollination services and on the understanding of phenomena of population decline.

Bees and Environment

This experimental unit based at the Magneraud site (Charente-Maritime) develops methods, tools and experimental devices for studying the honey bee in agroecosystems.

APIS

The researchers in this department based in Avignon combine different disciplines (economics, sociology, agronomy, zootechnics, ecology, ethology) to study the conditions of the transition of agriculture and rural areas. They model the components of the sustainability of beekeeping systems to judge their capacity for resilience in the face of hazards.

Ecodevelopment

This department based in Toulouse studies the genetic and physiological processes underlying the phenotypes of livestock animals. They are developing methods for genomic analysis in bees.

GenPhySE (Physiological Genetics and Breeding Genetics)

The scientists of this department based in Jouy-en-Josas evaluate and implement selection programs  aimed at improving the production and resilience of honey bee colonies.

GABI (Animal Genetics and Integrative Biology)

We have been working closely with INRAE since the creation of the UMT PrADE in 2010. Together these institutes have conducted more than 40 research projects and have published nearly 150 articles.

INRAE – National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment 

Five INRAE departments collaborate with UMT PrADE:

Since 2009, we have had a partnership with the Center for Biological Studies in Chizé which coordinates the Plaine & Val de Sèvre Research Site. This vast area (450 km²) offers an open-air laboratory allowing for long-term research. The Ecobee observatory has studied the relationship between agriculture and beekeeping, the links between agricultural production and pollination, but also between agricultural landscape in cereal-growing areas and the ecology of bees. These researchers joined UMT PrADE in 2020.

CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research)

The Anses runs a phytopharmacoviligance system to monitor the effects of pesticides on health and the environment. Within this framework, ITSAP has signed an agreement with the ANSES to report the results of its pesticide residue observatory to measure their effects on bees.  

Anses

The ANSES laboratory in Sophia Antipolis is the national and European reference laboratory for honey bee health. Its team, which has been a partner of UMT PrADE since 2020, develops analytical methods to identify and detect pathogens, as well as pesticide residues, and analyzes the impact of these stresses on honey bee health.

L'Acta accompagne anime et représente un réseau de 19 instituts techniques agricoles travaillant pour l’ensemble des productions agricoles, animales et végétales. Ces instituts techniques agricoles, dont l’ITSAP-Institut de l’abeille, sont des organismes de recherche appliquée, d’appui technique, d’expérimentation, d’expertise, de formation et d’information.

GIE Elevages / ADA Bretagne

These regional associations are governed by beekeepers and are federated at the national level by ADA France. They work to develop beekeeping in the regions by combining experimentation with recommendations and public outreach. Out of 15 regional associations, ten are members of ITSAP. In addition, the association for the development of beekeeping in Provence (ADAPI) has been a partner of UMT PrADE since its creation in 2010, and ADA Occitanie and Nouvelle-Aquitaine joined this unit in 2020.

ADA (Associations for the Development of Beekeeping)

This association contributes technically to improving the production of rapeseed and sunflower seeds. They develop the practices and tools aimed at optimizing the pollination of oilseed crops. Due to its expertise in the directed pollination of these crops, it has been a partner of UMT PrADE since 2020.

ANAMSO (National Association of Oil seed Seed Multiplier Farmers)

An agreement governs the partnership between the Chambers of Agriculture networks, the ADAs and the ITSAP-Bee Institute. Our joint work targets mutual enrichment between the development of agricultural activity and that of beekeeping, based on habitat preservation, honey bee health, pollination services, and acquisition of technical references that favor the sustainability of beekeeping and agriculture.

APCA (Permanent Assembly of Chambers of Agriculture)

This institute works to improve the competitiveness of herbivore livestock farms and their sectors in a constantly changing context. For many years, it has helped ITSAP in the implementation of methods that describe and evaluate beekeeping operations from techno-economical and organizational viewpoints.

IDELE (Livestock Institute)

This technical institute for the oil, vegetable protein and hemp sectors aims to improve the competitiveness of these crops by providing technical references. Some of these crops offer nectar and pollen to bees which pollinate them in return (rapeseed, sunflower, alfalfa...). This institute collaborates with ITSAP to analyze the influence of cultural practices on bee colonies and beekeeping, a part of the UMT PrADE since 2015.

Terres Inovia

The GPGR aims to improve, via a technical approach, the conditions of production, packaging, promotion or sale of royal jelly. This group is a member of ITSAP actively participates in the research and development network of ADA and ITSAP.

SYSAAF conducts finalized research and development work in genetic selection and provides technical support for the implementation of selection programs of professional breeders of various animal livestock: fish, crustaceans, shellfish, poultry, insects. ITSAP and SYSAAF collaborate, in partnership with ADA and INRAE, to improve honey bee selection methods.

SYSAAF (Union of French Avian and Aquatic Breeders)

This program coordinated by FranceAgriMer finances the implementation of actions aimed at improving the production and marketing of hive products. ITSAP benefits from a budget within the framework of national technical assistance aimed in particular at the dissemination of scientific and technical knowledge and the collection of techno-economic data, breeding techniques, or methods of combating aggressors and bee diseases.

European Beekeeping Program

The Special Agricultural and Rural Development Account (CasDAR) is funded by a tax paid by farmers (including beekeepers) on their earnings. This entity finances ITSAP in supporting innovation and development in beekeeping and pollination, and its work on the agroecological transition of agriculture. The guidelines are defined by the National Agricultural and Rural Development Program  (PNDAR) managed by the General Directorate for Education and Research of the Minister in charge of agriculture.
This budget also finances calls for R&D projects for which ITSAP can be a recipient.

CASDAR (le compte d’affectation spécial au développement agricole et rural) 

INTERAPI brings together professionals in the French beekeeping industry based on an inter-professional agreement to finance actions aimed at the development of beekeeping. It organizes fundraising from beekeepers, via the MSA, and downstream operators in the sector, conditioners, distributors and equipment suppliers. Part of its funds are intended for grant offers financing R&D actions or the transfer of technical references.

The government's Ecophyto plan aims to reduce the use of pesticides, in particular by financing R&D projects to measure the impact of products, develop alternative methods and support users in changing their practices.

Horizon Europe is the European Union's framework program for research and innovation for the period from 2021 to 2027.

In addition to the CASDAR and INTERAPI calls for proposals already mentioned, ITSAP can be financed by the Ecophyto plan to reduce the use of pesticides and their impact, or by BpiFrance to accelerate innovations, or through calls for projects at the European level (Horizon Europe).

This foundation finances projects of general interest that favor the safeguard of the honey bee, beekeeping and biodiversity, or projects related to hive products. 

Lune de miel

This foundation finances a very broad spectrum of actions, in all areas of general interest, aiming to build useful, concrete and sustainable solutions. 

Fundation of France

The Compagnie Nationale du Rhône, sensitive to the issues of bee protection and the development of beekeeping, financially contributes to ITSAP's projects.

The Lune de Miel Foundations, Fondation de France, and the Compagnie Nationale du Rhône financially support our projects for the development of beekeeping.
