To better understand the diversity of technical and economic functioning of beekeeping operations, ITSAP has been leading a Network of Reference Beekeeping Operations (RER) since 2011. This Network is made up of volunteer beekeepers surveyed by employees of partner ADAs and the Royal Jelly Producers Group (GPGR). We showcase the collected data with the goal of providing references that guide beekeepers in the management of their operations and allow advisers to better support them.

Techno-economics

If a piece of land is not able to provide a diversity of flowers producing nectar and pollen from February to October in nearby  areas within a few hundred square meters to several hundred hectares, it will be difficult to observe the slightest bee. Beekeepers raise honey bees and produce honey in a wide variety of spaces. Farmers are often the majority managers of rural areas and hold the levers to benefit from the pollination services provided by all bees for their crops.

Food Resources

Beekeeping is in a digital revolution, the proof is in the hives equipped with a diversity of sensors (weight, temperature, sound...) as well as a multitude of software and applications developed. But how do these new tools help the beekeeper on a daily basis? ITSAP aims to better adapt these technologies to the needs of beekeepers.

Digital Beekeeping

Faced with the challenge of high mortality, bee breeding has become a bigger part of beekeeping operations. Hive splitting allows for compensating colony losses,  increasing stock size, and generate more income with a complementary sales activity. Hive splitting and the production of colonies is often accompanied by the production of queens. This breeding activity guarantees a renewal of queens in production and a good understanding of their origins. Breeding can take a primary or secondary role, depending on the orientation of the operation.

Breeding and Selection

The pollination mechanisms of flowering plants and their major importance in agricultural production are so numerous and diverse that several lives of researchers would not be enough to answer them! The diversity of plant-bee interactions, varieties and pollinating insects explains this complexity.
Leaving aside the pollination mechanisms for each cultivated species, the choice is made to direct technical knowledge towards the management of workshops providing pollination services to farmers. Not to mention the importance of wild bees!

Pollination

ITSAP works for a better knowledge and valorization of hive products: this requires expertise and the creation of tools concerning, for example, the definition of hive products, their characterization, good hygiene practices, traceability and labelling, official signs of quality and origin.

Product Quality

Le travail initié sur la durabilité en apiculture nous a permis de proposer une définition de la durabilité des exploitations apicoles qui intègre différentes dimensions : la viabilité économique, la vivabilité pour les exploitants et les autres personnes intervenant sur l’exploitation, la capacité à produire de façon pérenne, l’intégration de l’exploitation dans le territoire et la contribution aux enjeux environnementaux et aux enjeux de filière.

Durability

The work carried out in ecotoxicology aims to acquire knowledge on the exposure of bees to toxic substances and to study the effects on their health and on colony performance.
In particular, we have compiled a database with more than 4,000 results of chemical analyses (bees, pollen, wax, etc.), tested or validated methods for evaluating toxic effects, and argued and produced recommendations in favor of protecting honey bees.

Ecotoxicology

 L'apiculture est une filière en transformation qui est confrontée à de nombreux défis. Changement climatique, pression des maladies et prédateurs ou encore pénibilité du travail au rucher, sont autant d'exemples d'enjeux que l'innovation peut aider à surmonter.

Varroa, virus, foulbrood, Asian hornet... the honey bee has its own share of parasites, pathogens and predators which affects its health and the development of beekeeping operations. ITSAP and its partners participate in providing technical solutions to beekeepers so that they can better monitor for these bioaggressors and make the right choices to protect their bee colonies
